Best Ramadan Checklist for Every New Mother

During the Holy Month of Ramadan, the everyday routine gets altered, even more so for all our new mommies out there, who are already undergoing the rollercoaster journey of motherhood.

From numerous breastfeeding sessions throughout the day to sleepless nights, Ramadan might add a layer of complexity for those who still want to fast during Ramadan.

New moms often experience Ramadan as a paradox, from accelerated exhaustion to deep spiritual reflection, abruptly shifting from fasting to focusing on baby care needs, such as nappy changes with Bloomies’ organic baby diapers & Bloomies’ soft and unscented wet wipes to feeding, soothing baths, or swaddling the little ones.

While many moms out there might miss the opportunity of fasting and/or experience the community over Ramadan, there are a handful of tips to still embrace and be part of the Ramadan activities with families and friends.

What we advise new moms during Ramadan

  • Exemption from Fasting: Breastfeeding mothers and those with babies below 6 months are generally exempt from fasting, with many choosing to make up the days later. This definitely applies to mommies with newborns who require easy-to-eat snacks and nutritious meals.
  • Ramadan Activities: Aim to experience the key Ramadan moments at home vs. outdoors, such as the traditional tarawih prayers, family iftars, and/or late-night suhoor.
  • Redefining Worship: Mothers often shift to listening to the Quran and practicing dhikr (remembrance of God) while caring for their babies.
  • Physical Challenges: Fatigue is high, making it essential to prioritize hydration and sleep over strict fasting for health.

New Traditions: Moms often decorate their homes, create special & intimate iftars for their family members.

Tips for New Moms During Ramadan

  • Prioritize Health: Focus on balanced meals. Try to incorporate slow-release energy foods such as wholewheat pasta, unsalted nuts, and protein-rich foods such as meat, beans & eggs.
  • Hydration is an all-time must: For fasting mommies, drink plenty of water during Iftar and Suhoor; supplement with Electrolytes to amp hydration.
  • Enjoy light sports activities: leverage the mild weather conditions during this year’s Ramadan in the UAE for morning walks with the baby stroller or before Iftar timing to light stretching exercises before going to sleep.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Focus on smaller, consistent acts of worship rather than trying to replicate pre-baby routines.
  • Involve the Family: Decorate the home to involve children in the festivities.
  • Utilize Technology: Use baby monitors to keep an eye on the baby during social gatherings.
  • Be Kind to Yourself: Recognize that childcare is considered an act of worship in itself.
